The ARGOS Challenge jury has released the ranking of the 2nd ARGOS Challenge competition held in April 2016.

The global robotic performances ranking

1st           Team VIKINGS

2nd          Team LIO

3rd          Team ARGONAUTS

4th          Team FOXIRIS

5th          Team AIR-K

After jury deliberation and decision to only score Team LIO on function missions where their robot did not require human safeguarding, the team moves to 5th position in the official ARGOS challenge rankings.

The official ranking for the 2nd ARGOS Challenge competition

1st           Team VIKINGS

2nd           Team ARGONAUTS

3rd           Team FOXIRIS

4th           Team AIR-K

5th           Team LIO

The ARGOS challenge is still very much open where any of the 5 teams can still win.  The second competition counted for 25%.  The third and final competition will count for 75% of the overall challenge.

The jury’s comments

  • Everyone has performed well in terms of safety with respect to team behaviour and  robots
  • As a minimum in March 2017, teams should be reaching the maximum level of performance that was expected in the second April 2016 competition in addition to the expected level for the third competition.

The teams’ strengths

The different teams scored well in different areas, highlighting individual strengths.

Safety Requirements – The second competition introduced further degraded situations where communications were temporarily interrupted and some robots were able to move to a designated safe area autonomously upon communications loss detection.    Further safety testing will be carried out in the March 2017 competition using different realistic operational mission scenarios.

Mobility & Navigation – The second competition introduced a multi floor environment where the robots were expected to climb and descend the stairs.  All teams successfully managed to climb the stairs in teleoperated mode.  One team was able to perform autonomous stair climbing.

Docking station – The second competition introduced the docking station requirement with some teams showing successful docking and recharging operations.  One team exhibited contactless charging.

Detection – One team demonstrated very good performance in abnormal heat detection with accurate temperature measurement and localisation of the hot spot. Another team demonstrated a high level of performance in obstacle detection and was able to return approximate dimensions of the detected items.

The second competition was a success for the state of development of each robot. Each team has improved significantly from the first competition, however each team still has a lot of work to do before the third and final competition in March 2017.
