To Satisfy Increasing Energy Demand, Total is Counting on Natural Gas

The world’s population is increasing and meeting its growing energy needs requires abundant and accessible energy. Total knows that this reality is complicated by the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a commitment we have undertaken for over ten years. We are meeting this challenge by increasing the development of natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel. In 2015, Total produced almost as much gas (47%) as oil (53%)1. Our aim is to increase the proportion of gas in our oil and gas mix to over 60% in 20 years.

Natural gas, the fossil fuel with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions

Coal is still widely used, accounting for about 30% of world energy consumption. However, it is anything but a clean energy source: burning it accounts for 44% of the world’s CO2 emissions. Total sees natural gas as an effective alternative. It is an abundant resource and can be used for many different purposes. It offers the major advantage of emitting half the amount of CO22 released by coal in electricity generation.
Total is fully committed to this energy transition, which aims to provide better energy, and has been gradually increasing the share of natural gas in the Group's energy mix for the last 10 years.

Total, a major player in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

In 2015, gas accounted for 47% of our hydrocarbon production, compared with 33% in 2005. Total operates across the natural gas chain from production to processing, transportation, trading, marketing and electricity generation in gas-fired power stations.
Natural gas can be liquefied, which gives it an additional advantage in that it is easy to transport over long distances by sea. Total is investing in LNG as a way of supplying energy to as many people as possible. A pioneer in this sector, Total is involved across the LNG chain, from extracting natural gas onshore and offshore to processing plants where it is liquefied, stored and then shipped in specially designed LNG carriers to regasification terminals for final delivery to business customers.

We estimate that by 2030, annual growth of the global gas market will be around 2% and that of LNG around 4%, while the growth of the global oil market will barely exceed 0.5%. But, stresses Laurent Vivier, Director, Total Gas Division, “we need to be aware of geographical disparities: regional markets have different dynamics.” 3

Innovating to make LNG even more accessible

Total's workforce is committed to the goal it set itself in 2007: to double sales of LNG by 2020. To achieve this, the teams have put in place an ambitious strategy, as exemplified by the Yamal LNG and Ichthys LNG projects in Russia and Australia respectively, both currently under development:

  • The Yamal LNG plant is located onshore but in the Gulf of Ob estuary, which is frozen for nine months of the year. The project's development therefore requires an innovative system to manage the ice and allow transportation by sea. A fleet of 15 icebreaking LNG carriers have been designed specifically for this project.
  • To transport its LNG from Australia, the USA and other countries, Total is building its own fleet with the construction of two LNG carriers. These ships, which will begin operations in 2017, will enable us to deliver clean, safe energy across the world, using an environmentally friendly means of transport. A small proportion of the LNG transported by these carriers will be used to power their engines, optimising transport operations and significantly reducing CO2 emissions when LNG is transported by sea.
